He proposed….finally! :)

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 22, 2008

Squeals!!!! He finally proposed! It’s official! :)

Kenneth Teo Kian Hao finally proposed to Seet Hui Qin! After 10 years, 3 months and 10 days! Hehe…ya…they starting dating in Secondary 3 :P Hehe…

The proposal was super romantic la. But actually there’s an unofficial one. Qin proposed to Ken on his birthday earlier this year for fun! Haha…because it’s a leap year this year and according to Irish tradition (don’t ask me why a Singaporean is following Irish tradition k?), the girl can propose to the guy and the guy can’t say NO! Haha….

But this time, Ken made it amazingly, super romantic! He was serving in the Air Force for National Service and he took up lessons for a private flying license! Yes! Means he can fly private jets! Cool eh? So, he secretly took the exam 2 months ago and kept it a secret from Qin (must have been super tough for him! Haha…).

So, on that fateful day. He tricked her to the airport and hangar by giving some excuse that he needs her to help him take a photo. Then he flew her up there and told her that they are super lost and he needs a GPS from his bag. When she opened the bag to get it, TADA! She saw the ring! Hehe….then he popped the big question!

Sigh….so romantic! Haha….So sweet!!

Ken and Qin are great friends of mine! They were like my “Greg and Jenn” in Singapore :) Check out their friendship with me HERE.

Check out the real, juicy story from their blogs! Click HERE for her story and HERE for his story! :)

Congrats you two! Can’t wait for the wedding! Haha..ya..I’m self-inviting myself! :) Hehe…

Trust and hope

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 21, 2008

There are a few issues I’ve been thinking about today, because several things happened.

Unfortunately, today is the most discouraging day since I moved to Seremban. I guess the disappointment is even greater when you know there’s an element of truth behind it.

First is an issue of trust. There’s a choir of voices that target my mind now! So many voices of opinions! Who do you listen to? Even your mind and emotions are battling it out.

As I was reflecting which voice to listen to, I realise my mind would pick the voice that I TRUST. It really tests the element of trust this time.

Then there’s also the issue of hope. Sigh…I don’t feel very hopeful now because of the discouragement. But thank God for His Word. It truly is alive and sharp enough to pierce through my heart! :)

Ya know…many times we hear people say this, or maybe we ourselves often have this mindset: “Don’t hope too much, then you won’t be that disappointed when things don’t work out”. Sounds familiar? But the Bible tells us something totally opposite! :)

Romans 5:3-5

“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

WOW! First of all, it takes someone of character to hope! I feel it extremely strong now because I feel discouraged. To keep going on and believe that things will turn out well, it takes character! No wonder God is more interested in our character than comfort.

Secondly, hope does not disappoint! Where else do we hear this? Nowhere! Haha… But how? Because of the love of God. Because of His great love, He has given us so many Promises. We shall be the head and not the tail. He has a great future that will prosper us and not harm us. That all things work together for those who love Him. We hope when we believe these promises are real in our lives. And we can only trust God this much and keep holding on when the love of God in our lives is so strong that it consumes us! That is how hope is able not to disappoint :)

Amazing eh? Hope is such an important element because when we lose hope, we lose everything! Now I just need to keep hoping, keep working hard, keep believing! It ain’t easy but if I want a way out, I guess this is the ONLY option I have. I’m not about to quit now! I’m living out my destiny now!

And it’s so true when the Bible says “Without vision, people perish”. Because the only encouragement I have that keeps driving me now is the vision that I believe is from God in my life. That is the only indication NOT to quit! I’ll get there…someday :)

So remember…when you lose hope, you lose everything!

From Homeless to Software Success

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 20, 2008

I saw this story on Yahoo! :) Be blessed by it ya :)

Accidental entrepreneur Bob Williamson’s personal turnaround led to the creation of his 180-employee, $26 million company

Accidental entrepreneur Bob Williamson, 61, is projecting his company, Horizon Software International, will hit $32 million in revenue this year.
BobWilliamson.jpg

Bob Williamson fled a broken home in Mississippi at age 17 to hitchhike around the country. He landed in Atlanta in 1970 at 24, homeless, broke, and addicted to heroin and methamphetamine. When he got a job there cleaning bricks for $15 a week, no one would have guessed that he would start a $26 million software company someday.

Successful businesses often spring from a combination of hard work and dumb luck, and Williamson credits both. Not long after arriving in Atlanta, he was injured in a car wreck and spent months recovering in the hospital. While there, he read the Bible, converted to Christianity, and decided to straighten up his life. It wasn’t easy: He had a criminal record, no college degree, and few job prospects.

“I was either going to commit suicide, which several of my friends had done, or I was going turn my life around,” says Williamson, now chairman and chief executive officer of Horizon Software International, a 180-employee maker of software for food service systems used in schools, hospitals, and other institutions.

Promoted Eight Times in Two Years

Williamson eventually landed a job putting labels on paint cans in the basement of the Glidden paint company in Atlanta. He cleaned up the labeling department and helped Glidden move to the company’s first computer system. His work ethic, he says, was: “First one there, last to leave.” Glidden promoted Williamson eight times in two years.

He went on to work at two other paint companies. By then a paint expert, Williamson started working in his basement to develop a better formula for his hobby: airbrush art. “I borrowed $1,000 on my Visa card and bought a bunch of chemicals and made a bunch of paint,” he says. At a trade show, artists flocked to his booth to buy the paint he developed, called Polytranspar. He quit his job and started his own paint company, Master Paint Systems, in 1977.

He spun that into several other businesses: a magazine for artists, how-to books, an art supply manufacturer, and a mail-order business, teaching himself as he went along. As the business grew, so did his need for organizational tools. It was the early 1980s, and he realized he needed systems for his warehouse, inventory control, and supply-chain management. “Back then you couldn’t buy software, so I hired a couple of programmers, and we wrote software for all these different companies,” Williamson says.

Recovering From Bankruptcy

By 1986, when he was selling 6,000 different art-related items, Williamson prepared to take the company public. But during the audit for his IPO, he discovered an accountant had been embezzling money from the company. “We fought our way through it, and my accountant and my lawyer and everybody told me to just take bankruptcy and forget about it,” Williamson says.

But he was convinced he could recover. Williamson urged his creditors not to file lawsuits that would force a liquidation. “Every week I would send them a letter and tell them what was happening, and we rebuilt it up beyond its former stage,” he says.

Focused on School Cafeterias

After recovering, he sold off his previous ventures, and in 1992, founded Horizon. The company was built on the back-office software Williamson spent years developing for his own businesses. “We wrote a system for our mail-order business, we wrote software for our manufacturing company, a point-of-sale system for retail,” he says. “We weren’t selling that to anybody. We had just written in-house for our own use.”

The company focused on systems for school cafeterias when Williamson found no one had written back-office software for that market. He was soon selling into other institutions like hospitals, nursing homes, colleges, and military bases. Horizon recently won the contract for the Los Angeles public schools, the nation’s second-largest system.

Williamson’s son, Michael, who is Horizon’s chief operating officer, says his father succeeded by jumping on opportunities that chance presented. “You would never have thought that we would be in food service software when we started Horizon, but the path just kind of led that way and we took advantage of it,” he says. “He’s always had a great ability to look out into other markets and other products.”

The Element of Chance

Williamson, now 61, presides over Horizon’s 44,000-square-foot headquarters in Atlanta. The company had $26 million in revenue in 2007, and he’s projecting $32 million this year. Still, Williamson says, “I’m the first one there and the last one to leave.” And he ascribes his business success to his conversion. “I have always tried to run my business according to the way that God would want me to…I’ve always tried to be honest and straightforward, and not lie and not cheat, and not try to take an easy way out.”

Hard work was certainly part of Williamson’s improbable personal turnaround: He recalls years of working 20-hour days and says he still only sleeps four or five hours a night. But chance guided his entrepreneurial success as well: a car accident that jolted him out of a destructive life, a paint recipe that became a hit, and early exposure to the burgeoning software industry.

And in some ways, Williamson’s arrival in Atlanta at the nadir of his life set the foundation for his rise. “I’d been through so much in my life, I don’t get discouraged,” he says. “The trials I’ve had in business are mild compared to what my life was like.”

What do you mean by future?

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 19, 2008

Oh man! this is unbelievable! My peers are getting married and having babies like there’s a sudden boom or a sudden obedience to the commandment ” be fruitful and multiply”! Scary!

Haha…my sister just came back for her classmate’s wedding, my friend just gave birth, another friend just found out she’s pregnant this month! Oh man!

Aawww…..sweet. Haha…Does it make me wonder when will my turn come? Yes it does! And it does not help with my mom and her friends and our relatives keep asking me when I’m getting married! Argh! I hope they realise I’m still studying! Haha….But oh well, I can just take it as a compliment as well :P They actually commented that it’s impossible there are no suitors due to the *ahem*…nvm…let’s skip this part! Haha…Or…maybe there are suitors afterall but…OK..let’s skip this part too! HAHA!

When I’m with my church friends, love is in the air! The issue on BGR, marriage, babies fill the air like oxygen! Those who are not attached are on the look out with their radars on! Those who are attached are talking about tying the knot. Those who are married are carrying other couples’ babies and asking about raising up kids, etc. Haha…

But when I’m back around my uni friends and lecturers, no one talks about relationship! Haha…All we can see is finishing our degree, get the license to kill heal and continue on with MRCP, be a specialist and if our little brains can take it, move on to be a consultant! Haha….love? marriage? What’s that?! Haha…We’re all looking forward to save the world with our limited medical knowledge! Hehe…

Sigh….what does it mean by future for me? I don’t know. Haha…I’m very much of both worlds. All I can hope for is the best balance *crossing my fingers*. Haha…And can someone in Singapore get a hunk to ask my sister out?! argh! TSY has 3 nieces, CLS has a niece “arriving” in August and DT has none! Argh! Haha….

And it’s quite scary to realise that I’m really growing up huh? Sometimes when I see my parents not able to do what they use to be able to do, sometimes they fall sick, makes me realise that I’m growing up and they are growing older too. My mom keep asking for grandchildren! Sigh…And wedding bells are nowhere to be heard for any of her angels. Haha….stress!

OK…I shall just live in denial for awhile more. Just look forward to completing my degree, be a good doctor and save the world! Haha…how idealistic! :)

I finally found you! :)

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 19, 2008

Oh man….this feels like a miracle! I finally found you!

Haha…ahem…found who? Actually…it’s more like, found what? :)

It’s my long lost favourite classical CD! Haha…I even blogged about it last time! Hehe…welcome back my friend!

I thought I lost it or someone borrowed it and didn’t return it! Hehe… It’s the BEST classical compilation I feel. Hehe…

It’s so funny. I was having an afternoon nap when my mom came in with the CD. I was half asleep but did manage to give a smile. Haha… She found it somewhere out there. Haha…

I actually asked my sister twice (still half asleep!) whether my mom found the CD cos I was wondering if I dreamt about it! Hahaha…

Oh yeah! Listening to those soothing tunes once again….

And they lived happily ever after…

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 18, 2008

And they lived happily ever after…

Awww…so sweet…this is “THE” line in a fairytale love story. But the question is, is there a fairytale love story?

Every girl will have their own “storyline” in their minds. They would start imaging their knight in shining armor rescuing them, from their childhood days. But will these dreams ever come true?

So…what’s my fairytale knight like? Oooo…I’ve got a long list! Hehe…And my friends always say that it gets longer each year! Haha…

There’s 2 categories in my list. Hehe…

Compulsary characteristics:

1. Love God, fear God. I believe when he walks right with God, all else is added into his (and my!) life.

2. A great giver. I believe in the principle of sowing and reaping. The more he gives, the more I love him! *siao right?*

3. Doing what is right at the right place and right time. I call this wisdom.

4.  A leader. I need someone who can lead me in every area of my life. He must be a leader who can preach and teach and build strong disciples.

5. A visionary. A man with a great vision in life can earn the full support of his wife. If he has a vision that is great, I can even give up mine for his. I’ve seen this in a couple that I know pretty well. They are Kevin and Esther. Esther is top in her field but she gave it up to support her hubby’s vision because he had a great vision that is worth dying for.

6. Completely honest with me and don’t hide anything from me. That will create trust. Trust creates security.

7. Love me, fear me. Giggles…

8. Love his family, love my family.

9. Can communicate well with me. Communication is the key to a relationship.

10. Sensitive to my needs. Mutual sensitivity is the secret that makes a relationship successful.

Nice characteristics that will charm me:

1. Rich!!! Oh man..what great joy if I can be Tai Tai! Wake up only to care for my hubby and kids and then have time to go for facial, gym, spa, shopping!!!!!

2. Can play guitar and sing. Oh man…come on…serenade me away….

3. Tall and well built. Hehe..forget about pretty face. It’s kinda tough to find a guy with nice face. The height and body will pass him as goodlooking! Hehe…

4. Play sports! Aahh…squeals!!! Imagine watching him play in a tournament with all the sweat! Aaahhh….charming! haha…Especially basketball! Aahhhh!!!!

5. Indonesian. OK…there’s something about Indonesians that I like .I’m not sure it’s the language or their ability to sing. No idea. Somehow…I love Indos…hehe

Haha…OK…suddenly the list looks so short! Hehe…

So…is there an ideal guy out there? Is there a fairytale love with a mighty knight in shining armor? Will I really find a guy that fulfill all the criterias I have in mind? More importantly, am I the ideal girl for this ideal guy?

To find out more, stay tuned to this blog! Hehe…Or better still, make your way to City Harvest Church on the 24th-25th May to hear it from Pastor Kevin himself! :) He’ll be starting on a new series on relationship called, “Does fairytale love exists?” :) Trust me, when it comes to relatioship advice, he’s the man! Haha….

Running revelations

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 18, 2008

Haha…revelations don’t run but “Running revelations” are the revelations I get when I’m running! Haha…

I went for another jog just now! I’m loving it man! And usually it’s a good time to be thinking about issues in my mind because while my body is working so hard, my brain ought to be moving to eh? As what they always taught us, “Badan cergas, otak cerdas” Haha…it means “an active body gives an active mind”.

I was just wondering, why do we need exercise? Exercise is helpful in reducing the risks of the top killers in the world: Heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and depression in some sense (well…our body releases endorphines when we exercise. These are the hormones that give you the “pleasure” feeling).

I wonder if God designed our physical body that way. Isn’t it ironic that people in the past did not talk much about exercise and having diseases related to lack of activity? I guess one of the reasons is because people in the past used their physical strength a lot during work. Unlike now, urban folks sit without moving an inch for several hours (besides walking to the loo or getting a cuppa) at work! OK…unless you’re working in the hospital wards!

But so many people hate exercise! Haha…I was one of them! I was a lazy worm who wouldn’t run or go any faster than walking! Haha…I was literally a book worm! Hehe… So if a lazy worm can hit the gym 3 times a week on an average, you can too! :) Here are some tips:

1. Start light. Take it easy. Don’t stress yourself and your body too much on the first day. Slowly increase the duration and effort needed during your workout :)

2. Do lots of stretching! I spend half the time doing stretching and anaerobic exercise. Besides preventing body aches and cramps, rumours tell me that it helps in maintaining a beautiful figure *whistles*. Working out can buff up our muscles and it’s not very pretty for girls. Apparently, stretching helps. Besides, you become more flexible too :)

3. Make it fun! Blast your favourite music! Or workout with your friends. Or play a sport. :) Exercise can be fun too :)

4. Don’t forget to drink water. Getting dehydrated after all the sweating is not pleasant. Then you’ll say exercise makes you sick! Haha….

Oh well…for many people I know, they don’t seem to care much about exercise. Is it even important? Especially for young dudes like us…diseases are far far away….Hmm…think again. A few facts here to keep us on our toes (running away..hehe…):

1. Exercise is one of the ways to prevent the top killer diseases. The risk of getting heart disease, hypertension, stroke can be reduced with regular exercise. In fact, diabetes can be better controlled when patients exercise. We don’t really know why but somehow it helps a lot.

2. Obesity is a risk factor for many, many diseases! So sweat it all out! There are a few theories to this. For some diseases like heart attack, diabetes and stroke, there’s a direct link. Fat deposits in our blood vessels can accumulate and finally block the entire vessel. This is called arteriosclerosis. Another reasoning is that fats tend to keep toxins in them, making it a risk factor for some cancer. Others say that free radicals are released from fat cells.

3. Sceintist believe that fatty streaks start accumulating in our blood vessels as early as teenage years. In US, there are many teens who lost their lives due to motor-vehicle accidents. As post mortem is a routine there, they found out that in many of the teens, fatty streaks are already present! So, don’t blame it on the later years! Start taking care of your health as young as you are! It’s just like protecting our face from wrinkles and trying to keep the baby-smooth skin. No point waiting for the wrinkles to appear and then try to fix that. Prevention is always better than cure!

4. Exercise improves our blood circulation and increases oxygen intake. So, more oxygen to the brain makes us smarter! Want better brains? Move it and stop sitting around being a lazy bookworm! Haha…

5. You have better stamina to do all you need for the day! Everytime I’m stressed and have tonnes of work to do, I know I need exercise. Everytime I feel tired all the time, I know my solution is to exercise. Hehe…try it! It works! :)

OK…enough about exercise I think. hehe.. just be on the move and keep yourself healthy! Hehe… I really love what I heard today: The best gift you can give your spouse and your loved ones is good health. How true…Just go to the wards in the hospital and see how dreadful it is to care for a sick relative or friend. It’s painful, heartbreaking and draining sometimes. Think of your loved ones and start taking care of your health :)

The Journey

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 18, 2008

I was running on the treadmill in the gym on Friday and something impressed upon my heart.

As always, when I run on the treadmill, my eyes can’t help but to keep checking the figures that are before me: distance covered, calories burnt. time I’ve ran and speed I’m running. And for some psychological reasons, the more I look, the tougher it seems. The more I feel it’s taking forever to hit my target and I keep hoping that I’ll reach my target soon! It’s torturous and it makes me gasp for air even more!

Suddenly I felt, in life, sometimes we’re like that. We have a target in our hearts that we want to achieve and we keep our eyes so fixed on it, we just can’t wait to hit it! We don’t care what happens but we just want to reach the target ASAP! Then we get very uptight, desperate to reach our goals and we miss out on other important things in life.

I just felt a prompting telling me to enjoy the journey. Enjoy the run! Enjoy the sweat, the muscle aches, the gasping for more oxygen, the music I’m blasting, the entire run! And before I know it, I crossed my target without realising and it was such a pleasant run! :)

There’s more in life than just hitting our targets! There’s people around us, people we love and people who love us. There’s another 6 billion people out there on this Earth and the earth does not spin on the “I” axis! There are another few billion species of things that God created out there for us to enjoy :) Sometimes our minds can be so narrow, we think there’s only “Me” in this world!

Enjoy the ride :) Enjoy the journey :) While we focus on what we want, let’s not forget other things and more importantly, other people :)

Smell the sweat and enjoy the muscle ache! :) Not only the destination matters, the journey matters as much :)

Expectations

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 18, 2008

This thing called expectations has been making me frustrated.

Sigh..sometimes I wonder who’s right, who’s wrong. Which expectation is correct?

I guess there’s no right or wrong answer….it’s just so widely varied between individuals. Probably it’s the differences that make us unique but it’s also the differences that allow conflicts.

So how? I guess it’s a very personal decision. Will you lower your own expectations to fit another person? Or will you pull the other person to your expectations? But will that cause conflict?

Will there be a balance where both parties can strike a balance? How much are you willing to tolerate and change?

Amazingly tricky eh? Makes me wonder if there’s ever a solution!

Another possible solution? Walk away! Haha…. Find birds of the same feathers and flock with them :) hehe…but then again, the easy way may not always be the right way.

Sigh….dilemma!!!

But then again..the decision is always yours. Haha… To stay or walk away…

More than words

Posted by sunshinedeb on May 18, 2008

I was taught, let your “yes” be “yes” and let your “no” be “no”. Because of this, people ought to be punctual, and keep their promises. Here are some unfulfilled promises in my life:

1. Body shop voucher

2. Thai massage (I cancel it voluntarily…oh well..unless I get some body ache some day. Hehe…)

3. 1 pair of shoes

4. Mascara (can have foundation also? :P )

5. New clothes (wah…so general!!!!)

6. Lullaby every night (senang2 song…giggles…)

7. Prayer and devotion every night

8. Shoping spree to buy whatever I want (waliao wei…haha…I hope there’ll be no regrets for this!) Haha….

9. Ole-ole Bali once a month! (waliao wei…will get broke and fat! haha…)

10. Phone! Hehe…

11. Good morning greeting everyday

12. Listen to ALL my advice when it comes to health-related issues

Haha…that’s a lot eh? I guess it’s really easy when we just “say” it and don’t think how much our words weigh. I think this speaks for myself as well. But I’ve a lesson today to be so careful with my words. Don’t make promises you can’t keep and don’t say things you don’t mean only to think that the hurt can be cancelled by saying sorry. Sometimes I think the phrase “Sorry no cure” is true.

But then again…I’ve also learnt about sincerity. If someone promised something but didn’t mean it. I would rather the promise is not fulfilled than for that person to just give me what was promised just to complete the duty.

Words are really more than just words….. :)
